During pioneer days, Bartlett was known as Union Depot, a stop along the stagecoach route between Memphis and Nashville. Many fine homes were built including one of the oldest existing homes in present Bartlett, Cedar Hall, built in 1845 by Dr. Samuel Bond.
This home is located at 3192 Court Street in the Bartlett Historic District. It was built in the 1860s and is one of 13 homes in the Historic District that are over one hundred years old.
In 1866 just after the end of the War Between the States, Union Depot was incorporated and named for Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, a business man and land developer. The new town boasted almost 100 residents and Major Bartlett became the first mayor, serving until 1870.
Bartlett grew slowly and became known as an educational center as well as an agricultural community. A courthouse was built in 1870 where criminal and civil cases for Shelby County were held until 1885. The first public school was chartered in 1885 and met in the old courthouse, a two story brick building owned by Nicholas Blackwell.
